Why Does Prayer Feel Hard? How to Deepen Your Conversation with Jesus

Hi Visionaries… can we be honest for a minute?

Prayer can feel hard.

There. I said it.

For something that’s supposed to be as natural as talking to God, sometimes it feels awkward, repetitive, distracting, or even disappointing. We sit down to pray and suddenly remember everything on our to-do list. We start talking to God and wonder if we’re doing it “right.” Sometimes we pour our hearts out and feel like our words are bouncing off the ceiling.

If you’ve ever thought, “Why is prayer so difficult?” or “Why doesn’t it come naturally to me?” I want you to know something:

You’re not a bad Christian. You’re human.

Today, let’s talk about Why Prayer Feels Hard and How to Deepen Your Conversation with Jesus.

Prayer Was Never Meant to Be a Performance

Some of us struggle with prayer because we think we’re supposed to sound impressive.

We think prayer should sound like:

  • Perfect church language.
  • Long, eloquent speeches.
  • Endless Bible verses quoted from memory.

But Jesus said something very different.

Matthew 6:7 (KJV)

“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”

Did you catch that?

Jesus never said prayer had to be polished.

He said it had to be real.

Prayer isn’t about impressing God.

It’s about connecting with Him.

Why Does Prayer Feel So Hard?

Sometimes prayer feels difficult because:

  • We don’t know what to say.
  • We think God is disappointed in us.
  • We feel distracted.
  • We don’t immediately see answers.
  • We expect ourselves to pray perfectly.

But God isn’t grading your prayers.

He’s listening to your heart.

Jesus Wants Conversation, Not Performance

Think about the people you love most.

The conversations that matter aren’t usually formal speeches.

They’re honest.

You laugh.
You cry.
You vent.
You ask questions.
You sit together in silence.

Prayer is like that.

God isn’t asking you to perform.

He’s inviting you into relationship.

Jeremiah 33:3 (KJV)

“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

Notice He simply says:

Call.

The Disciples Needed Help Too

Even Jesus’ disciples struggled.

They didn’t ask Him:

“Teach us how to preach.”

They didn’t ask:

“Teach us how to perform miracles.”

Instead, they asked:

Luke 11:1 (KJV)

“Lord, teach us to pray.”

If the men who walked beside Jesus needed help learning how to pray, it’s okay if you do too.

How to Deepen Your Conversation with Jesus

1. Talk to God Like Someone Who Loves You

You don’t have to clean up your words.

Tell Him:

“I’m scared.”

“I’m angry.”

“I’m confused.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I’m grateful.”

“I’m excited.”

God already knows.

Prayer is inviting Him into what you’re experiencing.

2. Start Small

Prayer doesn’t have to be an hour long.

Start with five minutes.

Talk to Him while washing dishes.

Driving to work.

Folding laundry.

Walking through the grocery store.

Prayer isn’t limited to a prayer closet.

It can become a lifestyle.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)

“Pray without ceasing.”

3. Use Scripture When You Don’t Have Words

Sometimes life leaves us speechless.

That’s okay.

Pray the Psalms.

Pray the Lord’s Prayer.

Read Scripture back to God.

His Word gives language to your heart.

4. Listen Too

Prayer isn’t just talking.

It’s listening.

After you pray, sit quietly for a few moments.

Read Scripture.

Reflect.

Ask:

“Lord, what are You teaching me today?”

Relationships grow through conversation, not monologues.

5. Don’t Let Guilt Keep You Away

Maybe it’s been days.

Weeks.

Months.

Maybe you feel embarrassed because your prayer life isn’t what you think it should be.

Visionary, hear me:

God isn’t standing there with crossed arms saying, “About time.”

He’s welcoming you back.

Every single time.

Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

Boldly.

Not fearfully.

Not shamefully.

Boldly.

What If God Feels Silent?

This might be the hardest part.

Sometimes we pray and don’t immediately hear an answer.

But silence isn’t absence.

A teacher is often quiet during the test.

Seeds grow underground before they break through the soil.

God may be working in ways you cannot yet see.

Keep praying.

Keep showing up.

Keep trusting.

A Gentle Reminder

Visionaries, prayer isn’t about finding the perfect words.

It’s about returning to the perfect Savior.

Jesus isn’t asking you to become an expert before approaching Him.

He’s simply saying:

“Come talk to Me.”

Tell Him about your fears.

Tell Him about your dreams.

Tell Him about your frustrations.

Tell Him about your day.

Because the goal of prayer isn’t perfection.

It’s relationship.

And relationships grow one conversation at a time.

So if prayer has felt hard lately, start again.

Not tomorrow.

Not when you feel more spiritual.

Today.

One honest sentence.

One whispered prayer.

One simple conversation with the God who loves you more than you can imagine.

And remember, a visionary mind nurtures a creative spirit. Let your vision guide you, keep your mission organized, and always keep creating. Until next time, stay visionary.
