Letting Go and Letting God: Overcoming the Fear of Full Surrender

Hi Visionaries,

Let’s talk about something deep today—the fear of fully surrendering to God. I know, even reading that sentence can stir up something in you. The idea of giving up control, of letting God have full authority over your life, can feel terrifying. But why is that? And more importantly, how do we overcome it?

Why Do We Fear Surrendering to God?

  1. Fear of Losing Control
We love control. We love knowing what’s next, planning our future, and having a grip on life. But let’s be real—how much control do we actually have? Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” Surrendering doesn’t mean losing control; it means placing it in the hands of the One who already holds the universe together.
  2. Fear of the Unknown
What if God’s plan is different from mine? What if He asks me to give up something I love? These are real concerns, but Jeremiah 29:11 assures us, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” God’s plan isn’t to harm you—it’s to prosper you!
  3. Fear of Being Let Down
Maybe you’ve been hurt before—by people, by circumstances, or even by feeling like God didn’t come through how you expected. But Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that God’s ways are higher than ours. He sees the whole picture while we see only a piece.
  4. Fear of What Others Will Think
Will people think I’m “too religious”? Will I lose relationships? Jesus said in Matthew 10:39, “He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.” Living for God might mean letting go of some things, but you will gain something far greater—real, abundant life in Him.

How to Overcome This Fear

  1. Know Who God Is
The more you understand God’s character, the easier it is to trust Him. “Taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” (Psalm 34:8). God isn’t some harsh ruler waiting to take away your joy. He’s a loving Father who only wants what’s best for you.
  2. Strengthen Your Relationship with Him
Just like with any relationship, trust is built over time. Spend time in prayer, worship, and His Word. The closer you get to Him, the easier surrender becomes.
  3. Look at the Testimonies of Others
Think of biblical figures like Abraham, who left everything behind and was blessed beyond measure. Or Peter, who left his fishing nets and became a foundational pillar of the church. Their surrender led to their greatest blessings.
  4. Take Small Steps of Faith
Surrender doesn’t always happen in one big moment—it’s a daily decision. Start with small acts of faith. Let God lead you in your decisions. Watch how He shows up, and your trust will grow.
  5. Let Go of Fear Through Prayer
Fear thrives in uncertainty, but Philippians 4:6-7 tells us to bring everything to God in prayer. He will give you peace in return. When fear arises, talk to Him about it.

The Beauty of Surrender

What if I told you that surrender isn’t about losing, but about gaining? When you fully surrender, you step into the fullness of God’s purpose for you. You gain peace, joy, and a life that’s more than you could ever imagine.

So, are you ready to let go and trust Him completely? He’s waiting with open arms.
