Discerning the Genuine: A Biblical Trilogy on True Discipleship – Article 3

Cultivating the Garden: Growing in True Discipleship

Hello again, Visionaries,

We’ve arrived at the final leg of our trilogy, “Discerning the Genuine.” Now that we’ve explored the marks of a true disciple and the challenges they face, it’s time to talk about growth and cultivation. How do we not only survive as disciples in a complex world but truly thrive and blossom?

1. Deepening Your Root in the Word

In Psalm 1:2-3, we’re told about the blessed man whose “delight is in the law of the Lord.” To grow, we must be deeply rooted in God’s Word, absorbing it, meditating on it, and applying it. It’s our spiritual nourishment.

2. Constant Communication with God

1 Thessalonians 5:17 simply says, “Pray without ceasing.” Prayer is our direct line to God, a way to maintain our connection and dependency on Him. It’s not just about asking; it’s about listening and being in His presence.

3. Fellowship and Accountability

Hebrews 10:25 encourages us not to forsake “the assembling of ourselves together.” We need each other for support, encouragement, and sometimes correction. True discipleship thrives in community.

4. Serving with Humility

In Mark 10:45, Jesus says, “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister.” Our growth is often found in service, in putting others before ourselves and serving with a humble heart. The word also says in Proverbs 22:4: “Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.”. Serving with humility clearly brings riches , honor and life.

5. Embracing Trials as Growth Opportunities

James 1:2-4 talks about counting it all joy when we fall into diverse temptations. Trials and challenges can be our greatest teachers, refining us and building our faith.

6. Staying Vigilant Against Spiritual Complacency

In Revelation 3:16, the lukewarm church is rebuked. It’s crucial to stay spiritually alert, fervent in our faith, and not become complacent or indifferent.

7. Continuously Seeking God’s Will

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus advises to seek first the kingdom of God. A true disciple’s journey is about continuously aligning our desires and plans with God’s will and purpose for our lives.

As we cultivate these practices in our lives, we grow stronger and more resilient as disciples. It’s a journey, with each step taking us closer to the heart of God.

Next, perhaps we’ll explore the fruits of this growth – how true discipleship impacts not just our lives but those around us. How does a true disciple make a difference in the world?

And remember, a visionary mind nurtures a creative spirit. Let your vision guide you, keep your mission organized, and always keep creating. Until next time, stay visionary.
