The Fear of Fully Surrendering to God—And How to Overcome It

Hi Visionaries, and welcome to another powerful step into the new year!

Faith—it’s the foundation of our walk with Jesus. But what happens when we struggle with fully surrendering to God? Many of us desire to trust Him completely, yet we hesitate. Why? Because surrender requires letting go—and that can be scary. Today, we’re diving into the fear of fully surrendering to God—and how to overcome it.

Why Do We Fear Surrender?

Surrendering to God means giving up control, and that’s not always easy. We may fear:

  • Losing control: We like having a say in our plans, but Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.”
  • The unknown: What if God’s plan doesn’t match our expectations? But Jeremiah 29:11 assures us, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
  • Sacrifice: What if surrendering means giving up something we love? Yet Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

How to Overcome the Fear of Surrender

1. Trust in God’s Character

We struggle to surrender because we’re unsure if God’s plan is truly better than ours. But when we remember who He is—a loving, faithful Father—we can rest in His goodness.

  • Psalm 100:5 says, “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”
  • Make a habit of reflecting on God’s goodness in your life.

2. Release the Illusion of Control

The truth is, we were never really in control. Surrendering to God doesn’t mean losing; it means trusting the One who already holds the future.

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 urges us, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
  • Write down areas of your life where you’re struggling to let go and give them to God in prayer.

3. Replace Fear with Faith

Fear and faith cannot occupy the same space. We strengthen our faith by immersing ourselves in God’s Word and prayer.

  • Romans 10:17 reminds us, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
  • Speak scripture over your fears—replace fearful thoughts with God’s promises.

4. Take One Step at a Time

Surrender isn’t an all-or-nothing leap; it’s a daily decision to trust God more. Start small:

  • Give God your schedule—pray over your day and let Him lead.
  • Surrender your relationships—ask God to align them with His will.
  • Trust Him with your future—release the need to have everything figured out.

5. Surround Yourself with Surrendered Hearts

Faith grows in community. Surround yourself with believers who model surrender and encourage you in your journey.

  • Proverbs 27:17 reminds us: “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
  • Join a Bible study or mentorship group focused on trusting God’s plan.

Surrender Brings Freedom

When we finally let go, we discover that surrender isn’t a loss—it’s a gain. Jesus promised in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” True peace comes when we stop fighting for control and let Him lead.

So, if surrendering feels scary, take heart—God is trustworthy, His plan is good, and He loves you beyond measure.Let’s step into this year with a heart that says, “Lord, not my will, but Thine be done.”
