Discerning the Genuine : A Biblical Trilogy on True Discipleship – Article 2

“Navigating the Waves: Standing Firm Amongst Counterfeits”

Hey Visionaries,

In our second dive into the trilogy “Discerning the Genuine,” we’re going to navigate the challenging waters of staying true to our calling as disciples amidst a sea of counterfeits. It’s not just about knowing what a true disciple looks like; it’s about living it, especially when it’s tough.

1. The Challenge of False Teachers

In Matthew 7:15, Jesus warns, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” The world is full of voices claiming truth. As visionaries, it’s our job to discern. This requires knowing the Word and having a relationship with Christ, so we’re not easily swayed.

2. The Lure of Worldly Pleasures

1 John 2:15-16 advises us not to love the world or the things in it. It’s easy to get caught up in pursuing wealth, status, or even the ‘perfect’ life. True disciples find their joy and contentment in God, not in temporary pleasures.

3. The Test of Persecution

In 2 Timothy 3:12, it’s stated plainly, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” Being a true disciple isn’t a popularity contest. Sometimes, it means standing alone, being misunderstood, or even facing hostility.

4. The Temptation to Compromise

Remember the story of Daniel in the lion’s den (Daniel 6)? He didn’t compromise his faith to fit in. In a world that constantly tries to mold us, our challenge is to stay firm in our beliefs and values, not bending to the pressures around us.

5. The Deception of Self-Righteousness

In Luke 18:11, the Pharisee boasted about his own righteousness. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we’re ‘good enough’ or better than others. True disciples recognize their need for God’s grace every day.

6. The Distraction of Busyness

In Luke 10:40-42, Martha was cumbered about much serving, while Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet. In our fast-paced world, it’s vital to prioritize our relationship with God, not getting so caught up in ‘doing’ that we forget ‘being’ with Him.

7. The Seduction of Power and Influence

In Acts 8:18-19, Simon the sorcerer wanted to buy spiritual power. True discipleship isn’t about seeking power for ourselves but serving others and glorifying God.

As we journey through these challenges, let’s remind ourselves of our true identity in Christ. It’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding.

Next, we’ll explore how to foster and maintain a disciple’s heart in a world that often seems at odds with our faith. How do we continue to grow and thrive spiritually?

And remember, a visionary mind nurtures a creative spirit. Let your vision guide you, keep your mission organized, and always keep creating. Until next time, stay visionary.
